FREE Summer OT Activity! 🍉🌭

Looking for a simple summer-themed activity that targets multiple skills at once?

My students recently completed this Picnic Hot Dog & Watermelon craft, and it was a huge hit! Not only did they have fun creating their picnic lunch, but they also practiced a variety of important fine motor and visual motor skills along the way.

Skills Addressed

✂️ Cutting curved and angled lines

🧵 Lacing and bilateral coordination

🎨 Coloring and visual motor integration

✏️ Writing and sentence generation

🖐️ Fine motor coordination

👀 Visual perceptual skills

Students cut out a watermelon slice and 3 oval shapes for hot dog and 2 buns, colored the rind with a green paint stick, added seeds (drawn or hole punched dots), hole punched the hot dog, and laced yellow yarn through the hot dog to create mustard! The finished craft was then attached to a paper plate picnic lunch.

Extend the Learning

Want to add a sweet treat to your picnic theme?

One of my favorite games to pair with this activity is Scoop ’Em Up! Students use an ice cream scoop to stack scoops of ice cream while working on:

• Hand strength

• Grasp development

• Bilateral coordination

• Motor planning

• Visual motor skills
